Valakkai Kara Varuval
This is another spicy South Indian recipe made with raw bananas. It can be shallow-fried with blend of spices.

Valakkai Kara Varuval
Equipment
- 1 Frying Pan
- 1 Spatula
Ingredients
- Raw Banana / Valakkai – 2 nos
- Oil – 2-3 tbsp
- Mustard / Urad dal – 1 tsp
- Curry Leaves – 1 String
- Asafoetida – 1/2 tsp
- Salt – as required
- Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
- Corriander Powder – 1/2 tsp
Instructions
- Start by peeling the raw bananas and cut them into small cubes. You can soak them in water to prevent discoloration until you’re ready to cook.
- Place the frying pan and preheat the pan.
- Heat oil in a frying pan or kadai over medium heat.
- Add mustard seeds and urad dal to the hot oil. Let them splutter.
- Then, add 1 string of curry leaves on to it.
- Carefully add the raw banana cubes to the pan. Be cautious as the oil may splatter.
- Fry them on medium heat for few minutes.
- Then, add salt as required / 1 tsp.
- Then, add a 1/4 tsp of asafoetida on to it.
- Sauté for a few seconds until fragrant.
- Next, add 1 tsp of chilli powder and fry for 1 minute.
- Then, add 1/2 tsp of corriander powder and saute it well for a minute again.
- Later add 1 tsp of oil to the poriyal and saute it for 5-6 minutes.
- Enjoy your homemade valakkai varuval! Adjust the spice level to suit your taste by increasing or decreasing the amount of red chili powder.
