Valakkai Kara Varuval

Valakkai varuval is a mouthwatering South Indian dish that features raw bananas as its primary ingredient. It is a popular and beloved vegetarian dish known for its rich flavors and satisfying crunch. "Valakkai" refers to raw or green bananas in Tamil, and "varuval" means fried or sautéed.

Ingredients
  

  • Raw Banana / Valakkai - 2 nos
  • Oil - 2-3 tbsp
  • Mustard / Urad dal - 1 tsp
  • Curry Leaves - 1 String
  • Asafoetida - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt - as required
  • Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
  • Corriander Powder - 1/2 tsp

Instructions
 

  • Start by peeling the raw bananas and cut them into small cubes. You can soak them in water to prevent discoloration until you're ready to cook.
  • Place the frying pan and preheat the pan.
  • Heat oil in a frying pan or kadai over medium heat.
  • Add mustard seeds and urad dal to the hot oil. Let them splutter.
  • Then, add 1 string of curry leaves on to it.
  • Carefully add the raw banana cubes to the pan. Be cautious as the oil may splatter.
  • Fry them on medium heat for few minutes.
  • Then, add salt as required / 1 tsp.
  • Then, add a 1/4 tsp of asafoetida on to it.
  • Sauté for a few seconds until fragrant.
  • Next, add 1 tsp of chilli powder and fry for 1 minute.
  • Then, add 1/2 tsp of corriander powder and saute it well for a minute again.
  • Later add 1 tsp of oil to the poriyal and saute it for 5-6 minutes.
  • Enjoy your homemade valakkai varuval! Adjust the spice level to suit your taste by increasing or decreasing the amount of red chili powder.
